What began in the lead-up to COP26 in Glasgow as the Climate High-Level Champions’ Race to Zero campaign is now entering an exciting new phase for the health care sector.
Over the past five years, hospitals and health systems worldwide, with the steadfast support of Health Care Without Harm, have transformed a bold idea into a global movement. More than 100 health care institutions across 30 countries have committed to the ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Together, they have shown that healthcare can lead on climate action with credibility, transparency, and measurable progress.
As the Race to Zero campaign evolves within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) this year, Health Care Without Harm is honored to assume full stewardship for the health care sector under its new name: Race to Zero for Healthcare.
Looking ahead, this next chapter will bring the same high ambition, transparency, and global scope with Health Care Without Harm’s renewed commitment to support institutions on their decarbonization journey.
This new phase creates opportunities to deepen sector leadership with new tools, technical guidance, and a brand-new Community of Practice designed to accelerate peer learning and turn commitments into implementation and measurable results.
This is not just a transition - it’s an evolution. Built on the legacy of our members and their progress towards decarbonization, the movement is growing and deepening its action.
The ambition remains clear: to support healthcare institutions worldwide in leading the transition toward a resilient, equitable, and net-zero future.
