At the end of April, with the support of Ecuador’s National Coordination for Emergency and Disaster Risk Management, the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) network welcomed the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS), an autonomous public institution that provides social security services and benefits, along with its 102 primary and secondary healthcare facilities.
This new group of members participated in a virtual onboarding session to learn more about the programs, projects, and initiatives led by Health Care Without Harm and the Global Network, and has committed to advancing sustainability efforts to reduce its environmental footprint.

IESS statement
For the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS), integrating its 102 healthcare facilities into the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Network strengthens our commitment to transitioning toward sustainable healthcare management. We understand that excellence in public health involves not only patients’ clinical recovery, but also mitigating the environmental impacts caused by healthcare facilities. Belonging to this network formalizes our responsibility to operate under sustainable standards, ensuring safe, resilient, and low-environmental-impact healthcare environments for our staff, users, and the broader community.
Joining this international platform represents a milestone in our continuous improvement policy, focused on the progressive decarbonization of healthcare services and the optimization of resources. This voluntary effort by our healthcare network seeks not only to reduce the ecological footprint of the health sector, but also to leverage the exchange of knowledge and global best practices. Being part of GGHH positions us as a leading healthcare system in socio-environmental responsibility, committed to sustainability and the overall well-being of the Ecuadorian population.
