Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) is an international network of hospitals, health care facilities and health systems dedicated to reducing their environmental footprint and promoting public and environmental health.   *To be eligible for the Allied Organizations membership category, organizations must operate within the healthcare sector with a clear focus on environment and health, while also demonstrating a commitment to supporting GGHH within their regions.

From low-complexity district facilities providing basic acute care to high-complexity national referral centers offering specialized medical services and advanced diagnostics. 

Health care facilities

Community health centers, primary care clinics, diagnostic labs, outpatient surgery centers, and specialized care sites offering essential clinical and preventative services.

Health systems (private, public, private for charity)

Organized operational multi-facility entity under a shared administration, public like ministries or private-owned.

Low complexity – such as a District hospital providing acute care services, may include minor surgery, and can include normal childbirth but not caesarian section or other surgical intervention, serves as referral from primary care level
Medium complexity – such as a Regional referral center. Basic specialties at the medium complexity level including: obstetrics, dental, radiology (xrays)
High complexity – such as a National (or International) referral center: services to include specialty care for cancer, cardiology, neurology or may provide only specialized care such as a Cardiology Hospital and include diagnostic services such as MRI and CAT scanning

GGHH Roadmap

Allied organizations have the opportunity to cultivate connections with leading healthcare institutions and health systems from around the globe, collectively reducing the health sector’s footprint. GGHH membership offers access to the network’s exclusive virtual collaboration platform, GGHH Connect, as well as GGHH’s exclusive resources and tools. 


Allied organizations will be recognized on the GGHH websites, and they will be invited to global and regional events, when applicable. 


Allied organizations are expected to contribute to the GGHH network across three core pillars, with a primary focus on advancing climate resilience and plastics reduction:


  • Amplification: Use your networks and local credibility to recruit new GGHH members and encourage them to commit to climate-resilient and plastic-free actions.
  • Knowledge Leadership: Share your expertise by adapting GGHH tools for your context, run trainings, and submitting case studies that demonstrate successful implementation of climate resilience and plastics reduction strategies on the ground.
  • Systemic Integration: Embed sustainability into the policies, guidance, and structures you influence by integrating sustainability criteria into your official documents, accreditation standards, or academic curricula.



NGOs / civil society: Local, national, regional, and global non-profit organizations whose vision and mission revolve around the environment and health.

Academia/research institutions: Universities, research centers, and academic bodies dedicated to advancing education, scientific research, and knowledge around climate and health.

Professional associations: National or international bodies representing health professionals, medical councils, or hospital associations with a focus/interest in climate and health.

Governmental entities: Public sector institutions at the local, regional, or national level responsible for policy-making, accreditation, and procurement standards in the health sector.

GGHH: From Commitment to Action

To protect health in a changing world, there is an urgent need for a healthcare agenda that addresses the climate crisis and plastics crisis together. This means building health systems that can adapt and respond to shocks and stresses while reducing emissions, eliminating unnecessary plastics, improving efficiencies, and forging a path toward climate-resilient, sustainable, and low-plastic healthcare.


By joining GGHH, institutions move beyond intention and into action translating these priorities into concrete, achievable steps in real healthcare settings.

Climate Resilience

From fires to flooding and extreme heat, communities around the world are facing the effects of fossil-fuel driven climate change. As climate shocks increase and intensify, so too do the pressures on the health care systems we depend upon. To protect people from the impacts of climate change, there is an urgent need to strengthen the climate resilience of health systems around the globe. This means building health systems that can adapt and respond to shocks and stresses, while also reducing emissions and forging a path towards net zero health care.

Plastics Reduction


Plastic pollution is everywhere: in our air, soil, water and even in our bodies. Plastics harm human health from production to disposal: from the generation of greenhouse gas emissions to the release of toxic chemicals and microplastics linked to serious health risks, including cancer and infertility.


More than an environmental issue, plastic pollution is a growing threat to public health, with vulnerable communities facing the greatest burden.


With 99% of plastics made from fossil fuels, tackling plastic use is essential to protect communities from the health impacts of climate change and air pollution. 


By joining GGHH, institutions move beyond intention and into action translating these priorities into concrete, achievable steps in real healthcare settings

The Action  Journey

Joining GGHH means becoming part of a global movement of health institutions taking action on climate and sustainability. To support you in that journey, GGHH presents a shared structure called the Action Journey. It has three stages: getting started by assessing where you are and setting goals; moving forward by putting a plan into action; and leading the way by refining your approach and raising your ambition. 

While it appears as an individual path, it is actually part of a global collective movement working together toward the same goal: a sustainable, climate resilient healthcare sector.

You don't need to have everything figured out to join, wherever you are right now is a valuable contribution to our shared mission.

Health Care Climate Challenge

An initiative of Health Care Without Harm, the Health Care Climate Challenge (HCCC) has been bringing together a global coalition of healthcare institutions committed to the sector’s transformation since 2015. As part of GGHH’s evolution, the Climate Challenge is now the primary pathway through which institutions working in climate resilience engage with GGHH, translate commitment into action, demonstrate progress over time, and get globally recognized for their work.

Action Areas 

Institutions can build climate resilience and reduce plastics through a range of practical actions. To support this, HCWH introduces four Action Areas that serve as clear, hands-on pathways for progress: Infrastructure, Natural Resources, Procurement, and Waste.

We invite you to select the Action Area(s) you are most interested in, to tailor the guidance, tools, and support you receive, designed to help institutions move beyond commitment and into meaningful, real-world action and tangible progress. 

In future cycles, you’ll have the opportunity to change or expand to other areas. Regardless of what you choose, you will have access to GGHH’s entire library of resources, tools, and support.

Plastics Reduction Challenge

The Plastic Reduction Challenge supports healthcare institutions in reducing avoidable and problematic plastics use, transitioning to safer and more sustainable alternatives, and strengthening systems that prevent plastic waste and pollution across health care operations.

Through this initiative, members are invited to:


  • identify their starting point,
  • select an action area aligned with their priorities,
  • receive practical guidance and resources,
  • share, track and visualize progress, and receive recognition for the progress achieved.

Letter of Intent

Race to Zero for Healthcare
Race to Zero for Healthcare is Health Care Without Harm’s highest ambition pathway for health institutions committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Building on the leadership, methodology, and momentum established through the original Race to Zero campaign, this initiative entered a new phase.

Guided by principles of equity, scientific integrity, resilience, and responsible claims, Race to Zero for Healthcare supports hospitals and health systems in translating long-term net zero commitments into actionable pathways for implementation, reporting, and sector leadership. It represents the highest mitigation ambition within the Health Care Climate Challenge and serves as a leadership track for institutions ready to move from target setting to full decarbonization planning and annual accountability.

By joining Race to Zero for Healthcare, institutions become part of a global community of health leaders advancing climate-resilient and low-carbon health systems worldwide.
