The Global Green and Healthy Hospitals network is building on its 15-year legacy with the launch of GGHH+, a new chapter and experience designed to support healthcare institutions worldwide in addressing two of today’s most pressing crises: climate change and plastic pollution.
For hospitals and health systems, these are no longer distant risks. They show up as power outages during heatwaves, disrupted supply chains after floods, and mounting pressure on frontline teams and facilities already stretched thin. They are also a direct threat to human and environmental health, as air pollution, extreme weather, and toxic plastics are contributing to a growing range of health issues affecting staff, patients, and communities.
At the same time, healthcare remains part of the challenge. As a resource-intensive sector, it continues to generate significant carbon emissions and millions of tons of plastic waste — fueling the very crises it also has to treat.
Healthcare institutions can, and must, lead the way forward. And as the sector achieves more when it works together, GGHH+ is designed to close that gap: more commitment, more action, more impact.
Two core priorities, one clear roadmap
Where the network’s previous agenda spread its focus across ten separate goals, GGHH+ focuses its new roadmap for the moment — two priorities, built from 15 years of collective experience and designed for a healthier future.
Climate resilience: preparing healthcare systems to withstand and adapt to climate impacts while reducing the emissions they create.
Plastics reduction: moving away from avoidable single-use, toxic plastics, choosing safer alternatives, and advancing reuse and smart practices.
Both priorities play out across four key action areas – infrastructure, natural resources, procurement, and waste – giving every member a concrete place to start, and a clear path to expand their impact over time.
Taken together, these priorities strengthen services, protect staff, patients, and communities, ensure continuity of care — while also improving efficiency, reducing costs, and delivering wider health and environmental benefits.
“This is a call to action for healthcare institutions in every corner of the world to reimagine healthcare not only as a first responder to the climate and plastics crises, but as a force for prevention, resilience, and transformation”, says Nick Thorp, Senior Network Director of Global Green and Healthy Hospitals, Health Care Without Harm
A more connected way of working
Alongside a new roadmap comes a redesigned member experience. Every institution renewing its commitment or joining GGHH+ for the first time will have access to the new GGHH+ member experience that provides:
- GGHH Connect+, an upgraded platform with a clearer view of your institution's progress, tailored support, and faster access to resources.
- Access to GGHH's full library of resources, tools, and case studies.
- Learn and collaborate with healthcare leaders worldwide through communities of practice and private groups.
- Eligibility for global awards, Race to Zero for Healthcare, and to be featured in GGHH channels and publications.
Commit and transform together
Healthcare systems can—and must—become part of the solution. By transforming how care is delivered, how resources are used, and how institutions prepare for a changing world, the sector can help create a healthier, more resilient future for people and the planet.
The GGHH network can lead this movement as we commit and transform together.
Current members can renew their commitment and move into GGHH+ by completing the renewal form.
New members can join the network and experience GGHH+ from day one by completing this form at the bottom of the page.
