As we continue our series highlighting the 10 Years Health Care Climate Challenge Leaders, we turn our attention to Latin America and celebrate the outstanding contributions of Hospital Clínica Bíblica in Costa Rica. Their dedication to sustainable health care practices sets a high standard for the sector.
Hospital Clínica Bíblica has demonstrated exceptional leadership in climate action, gaining significant recognition for its efforts. Since joining the Challenge in 2016, it has earned 15 awards, a testament to its sustained dedication and impact. 2017 stands out as a landmark year for the institution, when it received a Gold GHG Reduction in Energy award, a Silver Renewable Energy award, and a Gold Climate Leadership award, showcasing its comprehensive approach to integrating environmental stewardship into its operations.
Their proactive engagement extends beyond awards. Committed to amplifying their impact by sharing their experience, knowledge, and lessons learned, Hospital Clínica Bíblica has implemented and documented strategies across a range of sustainability areas. This includes initiatives focused on reducing anesthetic gases in the OR, minimizing waste through composting kitchen waste, harnessing renewable energy through the use of photovoltaic solar panels for water heating, and conserving water resources by reusing rainwater and promoting the rational use of potable water, available in Spanish in GGHH Connect.
Demonstrating their commitment to global collaboration, Hospital Clínica Bíblica also represented Latin America at the Climate Learning Initiative Global Gathering in Pittsburgh, engaging with health care leaders from around the world to workshop recommendations and advance the movement.
The institution’s leadership in sustainability has only increased, aligning with global standards and commitments. In 2024, the hospital presented its first Sustainability Report, referenced with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards, demonstrating its commitment to transparency and accountability. The report outlines its ambitious goals, including reducing emissions by 26% by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, through diverse strategies focused on:
- Reducing anesthetic gases and refrigerants,
- improving waste management,
- using renewable energy, and
- implementing robust ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) plans.
These targets align with the Race to Zero campaign, led by United Nations Climate Champions, where Hospital Clínica Bíblica was part of the first cohort of hospitals to join this ambitious global movement.
Through its actions and advocacy, Hospital Clínica Bíblica inspires health care institutions in Latin America and beyond. We celebrate its achievements and ongoing commitment to a healthier, more sustainable future, and we look forward to future breakthroughs in the Health Care Climate Challenge!
